Signs It Is Time to Replace Rather Than Repair

None of these alone is a definite signal, but two or more together usually mean replacement is the smarter call:

• The unit is over 10 to 12 years old
• Cooling has become inconsistent even after recent servicing
• Your DEWA bill has climbed noticeably with no clear explanation
• You are calling for repairs more than once or twice a year
• The unit makes unusual noises that keep returning after being fixed
• The system still runs on R22 refrigerant, which is being phased out and getting harder and more expensive to source

A faulty installation or an aging system can also cause refrigerant leaks, which alone can increase energy use by up to 20 percent. If your AC checks several of these boxes, repair money is often better spent toward a replacement.

The 50 Percent Rule

A simple way to decide: if the cost of repairing your current unit is approaching half the price of a comparable new one, replacement is usually the better long-term decision. Below that threshold, repair on a unit under 10 years old generally still makes sense.

How Replacement Works
